Our online format has been carefully designed to:

• enhance learning
• decrease time viewing computer screens
• increase access to training sessions
• decrease expenses
• eliminate travel
 

Part 1

Pre-course – 6 hours self-paced viewing education videos; reading Neil’s chapter on pain biology in Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Treating the Person in Pain; and reading a white paper co-authored by Neil, Yoga Therapy and Pain-How Yoga Therapy Serves in Comprehensive Integrative Pain Management, and How It Can Do More. (Materials provided.)

Livestream education – 3 days, 9 am – 12 pm and 1 – 3:30 pm

Breaks from ‘screen time’ and opportunities for sharing and discussion are timed to optimize engagement and minimize fatigue or overload.
 
Part 2

For the online course you will be required to ‘recruit’ your own guest – someone interested in exploring how yoga techniques can be integrated with current science to create a pain care plan. Your guest will need to be available for the hours indicated, be willing to work with you on building an individualized pain care plan, and have access to good internet. Please let them know that this is not 3 days of asana (yoga postures) practice.

Livestream education– 3 days, 9 am – 12 pm and 1 -2:30 pm

During this time you will meet with and learn virtually from your guest participant.

Post-course – 6 hours of work in which you will complete and submit your guest’s Pain Care Yoga treatment plan.

Pain Care Yoga Certification Course includes: complete Parts 1 and 2, and begin the Part 3 mini-mentorship.

Part 3 – Mini-Mentorship/Home study

The PCY certificate course provides in-depth integration of pain science, innovative pain self­ management techniques, yoga philosophy, and yoga practices. Participants will gain a solid foundation in pain science and in yoga related to pain and pain management. Daily yoga practices and pain self-management skills acquisition will ready teachers and practitioners to begin integration of Pain Care Yoga into their clinical practices, therapeutic yoga sessions, and yoga classes, leading to improved benefits and outcomes. Participants will be able to describe basic pain neurophysiology as well as key neuroplastic changes related to chronic pain, demonstrate instructing a client in the guidelines for how to move in the face of pain, including the key questions that increase success of recovery of function, list benefits of breathing and body awareness techniques, and benefits of practicing yoga postures, specifically related to the lived experience of pain.

Part 1

The focus is on enhancing foundational knowledge, and shifting paradigms of pain, people living in pain and evidence-based pain care. This course provides in-depth integration of pain science, innovative pain self- management techniques, yoga philosophy and yoga practices. Participants will gain a solid foundation in pain science, and in yoga philosophy related to pain and pain management.
Daily yoga practices will help the practitioner begin the integration of Pain Care Yoga principles into their clinical or therapeutic practice.

Attendees will learn: updated pain science and basic neurobiology,

Covering aspects in anatomy, biology, physiology, and psychology

How pain impacts every aspect of our existence

Using each aspect of our existence to impact pain and to increase evidence of safety

How to use “moving with ease” as both a pain education tool and for hypoalgesia

Yoga Therapy skills and techniques for people living with persisting pain

Treatment planning through case study reviews

 

Part 2:

For PCY Certification students:
Course enrolees and their case study student will attend this 3-day training. Practitioners will gain experiential learning of the techniques of pain care, mindfulness and yoga, build a personal self-care practice, and participate in group mentorship, as they listen to the experiences of people with persistent pain as they learn, practice and discuss pain care techniques.

When the course is in-person, in Naramata, we will connect with the local community, inviting individuals living in pain to join us for the second three days. Students will be matched with an individual in pain for their case study. If by chance the student is bringing an individual for their case study, there is no additional charge to bring that individual for Part 2.

For people living in pain (guests):
Immerse yourself in three days of safe effective practices to decrease your pain and help you live well again. Explore modern science-based views on chronic pain, while empowering yourself with practical tools to improve ease of movement. Heal yourself through yoga techniques designed to wind down your nervous system and promote positive, lasting changes in your body. Receive individualized guidance from a PCY student-in-training. No yoga experience needed.

Part 3:

Registrants submit a revised copy of the individualized pain care plan they shared with their guest in Part 2. Whenever possible, the registrant documents further assessment with the guest, as well as the guest’s responses/changes related to the pain care plan provided.

Registrants also read, evaluate and write a paper review on three Yoga Therapy and Pain articles from International Journal of Yoga Therapy (links to articles and review template provided).

Neil Pearson reviews the pain care plan and paper-reviews as a university professor, then provides feedback and asks for clarification or further details. The goal of part 3 is to assess is registrant according to their area of expertise and practice.

Those completing Part 2 will receive instructions in the paper reviews and submission of the case study.

Public Pain Education Sessions

Neil provides public pain education sessions in Penticton each second month, for free on referral from regulated health professionals. While travelling and teaching health professionals he looks for opportunities to offer these sessions in new locations.

Pain Care Yoga Certification Course

Part 1—Over the first three days, along with the other health professionals and yoga teachers you will explore current understanding of pain physiology and of the lived experience of pain, while integrating this with the practices, techniques and teachings of yoga. You don’t need previous education about pain or practice in yoga, but you do need a passion for working with people living in pain.

Part 2—On days four-six we will be joined by a group of people living in pain who are interested in learning more about pain and experiencing how yoga can help. You will experience the PCY practices and techniques in a group setting while learning from listening to the experiences of people in pain and the guidance we provide to individualize PCY practices. During this time, you will also be paired with one individual, commencing the case study process required for completion of the certificate. If you live close to the venue, and would like to invite a guest (person living in pain) to attend, then you will be paired with this individual. There is no registration cost for this individual.

Advanced Pain Care Yoga Workshop/Retreat

This is a workshop for health practitioners—regulated health professionals, yoga teachers and movement professions.

The focus of this five-day program is on developing further expertise, moving beyond foundational principles of Pain Care Yoga and focusing on key areas that will enhance your work.

Come to experience the meditative and compassionate heart of yoga, to integrate gratitude and ritual techniques into your clinical work, and improve patient/client outcomes through application of Pain Care Yoga to specific clinical presentations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss pathophysiologic and yogic views of common regional pain problems.
  2. Explore and experience techniques beyond the foundational practices to gain a deeper skill-set including conscious mindful actions specifically to help manage pain and or psycho/spiritual suffering, mindful goal setting and conscious creation of thoughtful intentions involving personal affirmations, and ritual for better long term outcomes.
  3. Begin to better understand the spirit of consciousness and awareness in pain care.
  4. Enhance facilitation techniques for individual and group settings.
  5. Practice teaching and improve your client interactions through mentoring and peer feedback.
