Chapter 6

The Thyroid Connection; A Felicitous Feline; Challenging the Pain of De feet.

As September of 2016 wore on I was making slow progress, with the help of the online self-management program awareness exercises. In particular, there was a short “letting go” practise I did daily. I’d listen to this recording mid-morning on my iphone, lying on my side in bed, soothed by the touch of cotton sheets and a duvet.

Chapter 5 Part 2:

Pearson vs. Sarno; Changing pain with emotion; New partner on the road

I stood in my bedroom with my back to the full-length mirror. Tugging my T-shirt out, I eyed the bump in my spine, just below my waist.

For more than 30 years, medical professionals had been telling me that this bulge — combined with a scoliosis and deteriorating discs —

Chapter Five: The Sari Quilt; Love and Challenge; A Brain Changer

In September, 2016, everything began to change in my life. Not that I was doing much. Outwardly. I’d stopped paying attention to what was going on in the world.

On September 1st, a South Korean palm oil company was accused of setting vast tracts of tropical forests aflame in Indonesia. On September 2nd, Samsung Electronics issued a recall of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones with fire-prone batteries.

Talking Back to the Joykill Judge; Goals get me out of the Pain Gaol

Gentle movement challenge was part of the program Pearson prescribed for persistent pain when I consulted him in Penticton in 2012. After I came back home I knew I had to set some goals that would challenge my resistance to movement.

On a good day I could walk for 10 minutes. I decided to increase that by one minute per week.

Memoir 3rd Excerpt – Barbara Stowe

Taming Attention; Overcoming a Phobia; Pain Begins to Recede

I arrived home from Penticton in a heightened state. It felt like energy was pouring off my body. Sunlight was dancing rainbows off the prisms in the kitchen window as Joe and I sat down to talk. He was sipping cappucino from the beautiful footed-cup he’d made but I was too wired for caffeine and he could hardly get a word in edgewise as I babbled on and on about Pearson’s techniques.

The Buddha Dream; a Vision; and an Olympic Challenge

Shortly before I started the Life is Now online program at the end of August, 2016, I had an extraordinary dream. I dreamt that I was sitting with the Buddha. We sat side by side, cross-legged on the floor. I didn’t dare turn my head to take a closer look. He didn’t turn his head either, but suddenly I heard his voice:

“You know,

I will never forget the day I changed my brain, and changed the pain.

It was in the second week of September, 2016. The day dawned bright and clear. My mind was not clear, though. The pain that had been dogging me for a year caused perpetual brain fog.

I struggled to finish a “to-do” list. after breakfast, distracted by the sharp ache in my lower back. It moved to my right shoulder.
